What Is Tenax Solido?

A polyester mastic for bonding, filling and mending stone.

Tenax Solido is a polyester-based stone adhesive, made by Tenax in Italy. Fabricators reach for it to join stone to stone, close a seam, pack a chip and fill the natural voids that some slabs turn up with.

Two parts go into it. Hardener is stirred through the mastic immediately before use, and the mixture cures chemically instead of drying, which is why it sets firm enough to be sanded and polished flush with the stone around it.

Customers ask for it as Tenax Mastic, or simply as Tenax and a color. Three shades are stocked, black, white and transparent, and which one you take home matters more than most people expect.

What Is Tenax Solido Used For?

Four jobs, and most of them happen at the fabrication stage.

Bonding stone to stone

Laminated edges come up most often. Two 18 mm layers glued face to face read as a 36 mm profile, and Solido is what holds them together. Mitred corners work the same way.

Closing seams

An L-shaped or U-shaped run has to break somewhere, and the mastic packs and color-matches that join. It is the reason a well-made counter shows its seams close up but not from across the room.

Filling chips

A chip at an edge or beside a cutout is packed, cured and sanded flush. Color runs through the whole depth of natural stone, so a filled chip vanishes far better than it would on a surface-printed material.

Filling natural voids

Small pits and fissures turn up in some slabs, which is normal rather than a defect. Fabrication packs and polishes them out, and that is why a finished counter looks more even than the raw slab did.

How Do You Apply Tenax Solido?

Mix small, because the clock starts straight away.

Clean and Dry the Faces

Dust, sealer and grease each stop the mastic gripping. Wipe the joining faces down, let them dry through, and leave a repair area unsealed until the fill has cured.

Mix Only What You Can Place

Stir hardener into a small quantity and mix it right through. Curing begins the moment it is catalysed, so make up batches you can use inside the working time rather than preparing the whole job at once.

Overfill, Then Sand It Back

Pack the repair slightly proud, let it cure right through, then sand and polish it flush. Fill level and you get a dip once it shrinks, and a dip catches the eye faster than a color mismatch.

Can You Repair a Chip Yourself?

Yes. Small ones, with patience.

Yes. A small chip on an edge or next to a sink is a realistic evening for a careful homeowner. Clean it out, mix a little mastic in the nearest color, overfill, wait for the cure, then sand and polish it back.

Hang on to the fragment if it survived. A piece that has come away cleanly can sometimes be glued back rather than filled, and a rebonded fragment matches perfectly for the simple reason that it is the same stone.

Scale sets the honest limit. Fingernail-sized damage is a home job. A broken corner, a cracked slab or damage around a cutout belongs to a fabricator, and a failed attempt usually makes the professional repair harder. Granite will not scorch, though a trivet still earns its place, since any stone can crack under a sudden extreme temperature change, and a crack is well past what a fill can answer.

Will the Repair Be Invisible?

No. Close, on the right stone, at the right distance.

No. What you have is a color-matched patch of resin sitting inside a piece of natural stone. Standing over a busy granite you will lose it entirely. Under a downlight at close range, on a plain surface, you will find it again.

Busy stone hides a fill best. A coarse mottle such as Salt and Pepper or Tiger Orange breaks one up completely. A near-plain surface such as Black Sapphire offers it nowhere to hide.

Veining is the hard case. Filling a chip that crosses a vein means matching the ground color and the vein together, and the mastic comes in three colors rather than an infinite number. Expect a compromise.

Settle the expectation before you begin. Ninety percent invisible counts as a good outcome on natural stone, and it beats living with the chip by a wide margin.

Which Color Should You Choose?

Match the ground, not the pattern.

Work against the dominant background color of the slab rather than against a vein or a fleck. On a grained stone it is the ground the eye reads, and matching a black fleck on a white granite leaves you with a dark dot.

Black answers the dark granites, so Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and the darker Sapphire quartz. White answers the pale whites and grays, Caesar White, Moonstone and the Calacatta quartz range among them.

Warm neutrals are the awkward middle. For Marigold, Beige Porrino and Crema Marfil, ask the Cagayan de Oro branch which of the three sits best against your slab.

Transparent exists for seams on veined or translucent stone, where any solid color would read as a line. It is the hardest of the three to use well, because it picks up the color of whatever lies behind it, so test on an offcut first.
