What Is Tenax Proseal?

An impregnating sealer that travels into the stone, not over it.

Tenax Proseal is a solvent-based impregnating sealer for natural stone, made by Tenax in Italy. It guards against oil and water together, and that pairing is what sets it apart from a water-only bottle.

Impregnating is the word that carries the weight. Proseal sinks into the pore structure and lines those pores from within instead of building a film. Nothing sits on top waiting to thin out or peel.

That is why a sealed counter still feels like stone under your hand. No coating has been added; the pores have simply been taught to repel liquid rather than drink it.

We seal worktops with Proseal at installation, and it is the bottle to buy when they come due again. Walls, floors and outdoor stone belong to Tenax Hydrex instead.

Which Stones Need Sealing?

Not the ones you would guess. Color predicts nothing at all.

This is the misunderstanding we correct more than any other. Porosity shifts from one stone to the next and takes no notice of how pale or dark a slab happens to look.

Needs sealing

Most of the granites on the Cagayan de Oro list, Salt and Pepper, River White, Paradiso Dark, Gray Honda and Black Impala among them. Every marble and every onyx as well.

Needs no sealing at all

Engineered quartz, without a single exception, because it is manufactured rather than quarried. Among granites, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold.

Why the rule of thumb fails

Marigold is a light brown and wants nothing. Gray Honda and Paradiso Dark are both dark and both want sealing. Anyone who tells you dark stone never needs a sealer, without first asking which stone, has not checked.

How to settle it on your own counter

Leave a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the surface for 15 minutes. Darkening underneath means the stone is absorbing and wants sealing. Beading water that wipes away clean means leave it alone.

How Do You Apply Tenax Proseal?

Three steps, and the third is the one people skip.

Begin Clean and Fully Dry

The stone has to be bone dry, since a sealer cannot enter a pore that is already holding water. Wash it with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, then give it several hours before you start.

Spread Thinly and Let It Sink

Lay a thin even coat down with a cloth or applicator pad and leave it to penetrate for as long as the bottle states. Work in sections so no patch dries before you come back to it.

Buff Away Every Last Smear

Lift the excess with a clean dry cloth before it dries. Whatever stays on the surface hardens into a hazy film, and that haze is the complaint we hear most about sealing. Ventilate as you go.

Does Sealing Change How the Stone Looks?

No, as long as the excess comes off.

No. Proseal is an impregnating sealer, so it works below the surface and leaves no film, no gloss and no shift in color. A counter sealed properly is indistinguishable from one never treated.

Residue is the single exception. Sealer left to dry on top rather than buffed away sets into a patchy bloom, and on dark polished granite it shows badly. That is a fault in the application, not in the product.

Where a counter has been hazed this way, the branch can advise on stripping it back, although buffing properly the first time is far less trouble.

Proseal is no polish and adds no shine. For gloss on natural stone, Stone Care Granite & Stone Polish handles that separate job. Nor does sealing alter how stone takes heat: granite will not scorch, yet a trivet still earns its place, since any stone can crack under a sudden extreme temperature change.

Does Sealing Prevent Etching?

No. And this one catches people out badly.

No. A sealer keeps liquid from soaking in. It does nothing to stop acid attacking the surface chemically, and those are two entirely separate forms of damage.

A stain is discoloration from something the stone has absorbed. An etch is a dulled mark where acid has eaten into the polish itself. Lemon juice, vinegar and wine will etch marble or onyx straight through a sound sealer.

This weighs heaviest on the calcium carbonate stones, which means every marble and every onyx. Sealing them is still worth doing, and it still will not rescue the surface from a glass of red left standing overnight.

Granite is a silicate rather than calcium carbonate and does not etch, so on granite a sealer really does cover the main risk. Quartz does not etch either, and needs no sealer at all.

Tenax Hydrex at ₱3,500, a full ₱1,100 below Proseal, guards against water rather than oil. That suits cladding, flooring and pool surrounds, where damp is the threat and cooking oil is not.

Cera Fluida is a wax, not a sealer

Tenax Cera Fluida, level with Hydrex at ₱3,500, deepens color and adds a soft sheen. It rests on the surface and wears away, so it is a finish rather than protection. Keep it off quartz, where wax yellows.

Solido is an adhesive

Tenax Solido, ₱1,600 in black and white and ₱1,900 in transparent, is a polyester mastic for bonding and mending stone. Listed here because the names get tangled at the counter.

How Often Should You Reseal?

When the water test fails, and never on a calendar.

Test Twice a Year

Drop a little water onto an inconspicuous part of the counter, leave it a quarter of an hour, then wipe it away. Darkened stone underneath means the sealer has given out. Water still beading on unchanged stone means it is working. Marble and onyx can fail that check as often as every six months, while the granites that need sealing usually manage a year.

Test the Areas That Work Hardest

Beside the sink and next to the hob go first, because that is where water pools and oil lands. A counter can want resealing at the sink while the far end is still perfectly sound.

Do Not Reseal for the Sake of It

Any sealer beyond what the stone can drink dries on top and hazes. Resealing to a schedule instead of a test is exactly how counters end up cloudy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my counter needs sealing?
Leave a few drops of water on an inconspicuous spot for 15 minutes. Darkening underneath means it wants sealing. Water that beads and wipes away with no mark means the seal is still doing its work. This holds on any natural stone.

What is the difference between Proseal and Hydrex?
Proseal guards against oil and water, at ₱4,600, and is the countertop choice. Hydrex guards against water alone, at ₱3,500, for walls, floors and outdoor stone. In a kitchen oil is the harder problem, which is why counters get Proseal.

Will sealing stop my marble from etching?
No. Sealing prevents absorption, not chemical attack. Acid will still dull the polish on marble and onyx through a flawless seal. Keeping lemon juice, vinegar and wine off those surfaces is the only real defence against etching.

Does engineered quartz need sealing?
Never. Quartz is manufactured, roughly 93 percent crushed natural stone bound with about 7 percent resin, so a sealer only leaves a film. Anyone selling you sealer for a quartz counter has not asked what it is made of.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes. It is a wipe-on, wait, wipe-off job that fills an evening. The step that decides the result is buffing away every trace of excess before it dries, because residue hardens into a haze.

What happens if I leave residue on the surface?
It sets into a patchy, cloudy film that is very obvious on dark polished stone. Recoverable, certainly, though stripping it back costs more effort than buffing properly at the time.

Will it remove a stain that is already there?
No, and sealing over a stain locks it in. Draw it out first with a poultice, let the stone dry through, then seal. The branch can advise on which poultice suits.
