What Is Tenax Hydrex?

A water-repellent sealer for walls, floors and stone left outside.

Tenax Hydrex is an impregnating water-repellent sealer for natural stone, made by Tenax in Italy. Its brief is damp rather than grease, which makes it the sensible pick beyond the kitchen.

Like Tenax Proseal, it draws into the pore structure and works from within the slab rather than settling as a layer over it. Nothing rests on top waiting to flake, thin out or turn cloudy.

What separates them is the liquid each turns back. Hydrex handles water; Proseal covers water and oil. Around a pool deck oil never enters the picture, and Hydrex asks less of the budget.

Cladding, flooring, facades, pool surrounds and shower walls are its territory. Counters and vanity tops, where cooking oil is genuinely in play, want Proseal instead.

Which Surfaces Need Hydrex?

Vertical, outdoors, and wherever water is left to sit.

Floors and wall cladding

Marble makes the clearest case. Crema Marfil, Carrara White and Statuario are porous right through and sell for floors and cladding rather than worktops, so Hydrex is the standard treatment.

Pool surrounds and outdoor stone

Granite keeps its color in full sun where quartz will not, so a lanai counter or poolside run in Paradiso Light or Marigold is Hydrex territory on a Cagayan de Oro project. Stone left outside works harder, so test it more often than a floor indoors.

Bathroom walls and onyx features

Onyx is porous and brittle, which is why we sell it for feature walls instead of counters. Honey Onyx and Multicolor Onyx both take Hydrex happily on a wall.

What does not need it at all

Engineered quartz, every design of it, because it is made rather than quarried. Among granites, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold are tight enough to skip sealing. Those will not scorch either, though a trivet still earns its place, since any stone can crack under a sudden extreme temperature change. Shade predicts none of this, so check the stone.

How Do You Apply Tenax Hydrex?

Three steps, and vertical work needs the most care.

Begin Clean and Thoroughly Dry

No sealer enters a pore already occupied by water, and that bites hardest outdoors, where stone holds damp for longer. Wash down with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, then allow a dry day or two.

On Walls, Climb From the Bottom

Treat a vertical surface from its lowest course upward, so runs fall onto stone you have already covered instead of streaking dry cladding underneath. Every coat stays thin and even.

Buff Away Every Last Smear

Lift the excess with a clean dry cloth while it is still wet. Anything left sitting there sets into a hazy bloom, and across a wide floor that is an enormous area to put right. Ventilate as you go.

Does Hydrex Change How the Stone Looks?

No, as long as the excess comes off.

No. Hydrex works beneath the surface and leaves no layer, no gloss and no shift in color. A wall sealed properly is indistinguishable from one never treated at all.

Residue is the single exception. Sealer left to dry on top instead of being wiped away sets into an uneven bloom, and over a wide floor that is a great deal of surface to strip back. Work in panels, with a dry cloth following behind.

Deepening the color is a separate ambition and a separate bottle. Tenax Cera Fluida enriches tone and lays down a soft sheen, and it goes over a sealed surface quite happily.

One thing sealing never does is close a natural void. Marble and onyx slabs often arrive with small pits and fissures, which are packed and polished during fabrication, and Hydrex neither fills them nor changes how they read.

Does Hydrex Prevent Etching?

No. And on marble and onyx that matters.

No. A sealer keeps liquid from being drawn in. It does nothing to stop acid chewing at the surface chemically, and those are two separate forms of damage.

A stain is discoloration left by something the stone drank. An etch is a dulled patch where acid has bitten into the surface itself. Every marble and every onyx is calcium carbonate, so all of them etch on acid contact straight through a sound seal.

That is why we steer both materials away from kitchen counters. On a floor or a wall, vinegar and citrus almost never turn up, so sealing really does cover the everyday risk. Beside a hob it would not.

Granite is a silicate rather than calcium carbonate and does not etch. Outdoors the thing to watch is not acid but how fast the seal is used up, since sun and rain take it down quicker than an indoor floor.

Tenax Cera Fluida, level with Hydrex at ₱3,500, deepens color and adds a soft sheen. It rests on the surface and wears away, so it is a finish rather than protection, needing redoing far more often than a sealer. Keep it off quartz, where wax yellows.

Solido is an adhesive

Tenax Solido, ₱1,600 in black and white and ₱1,900 in transparent, is a polyester mastic for bonding and mending stone. Listed here because the Tenax names get tangled at the counter.

How Often Should You Reseal?

When the water test fails, and outdoors that arrives sooner.

Test Indoors Twice a Year

Drop a little water onto an inconspicuous spot, leave it a quarter of an hour, then wipe. Darkened stone underneath means the seal has given out; water still beading means it is working. Marble and onyx can fail that check as often as every six months, while the granites that need sealing usually manage a year.

Test Outdoor Stone More Often

Sun, rain and foot traffic use up a seal faster than an indoor floor does. Look over pool surrounds and facades twice across the year rather than once, and let the result decide.

Test Where the Work Is Hardest

The lip of a pool, a doorway threshold, the foot of a wall where rain kicks back. Those spots surrender first, and a floor can want attention there while the rest is still sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hydrex and Proseal?
Hydrex turns back water, at ₱3,500. Proseal turns back water and oil, at ₱4,600. Walls, floors, cladding and outdoor stone want Hydrex, while counters, where cooking oil is the real menace, want Proseal.

Can I use Hydrex on a kitchen countertop?
You can, but it is the wrong tool for the job. It will not keep cooking oil out of a porous stone, and oil is what marks a counter. Put the extra ₱1,100 toward Proseal anywhere food is prepared.

Does marble really need sealing?
Yes, and rather more often than granite. Marble is porous throughout, so left bare it takes up water, oil and anything carrying color. Expect to redo it as often as every six months, with the water test rather than the calendar making the call.

Will sealing stop my marble from etching?
No. Sealing prevents absorption, not chemical attack. Acid will still dull marble and onyx straight through a flawless seal, which is why we put those materials on floors and walls rather than kitchen counters.

Does engineered quartz need sealing?
Never. Quartz is manufactured, roughly 93 percent crushed natural stone bound with about 7 percent resin, so a sealer only leaves a film and achieves nothing. It belongs indoors too, since UV yellows it permanently.

How do I seal a wall without streaking it?
Work upward from the bottom so runs land on stone already treated, hold the coats thin, and buff the excess away before it dries. Streaking comes from residue setting on the surface, not from the product itself.

Can I put Hydrex over an older sealer?
Yes, provided the old one has worn down rather than hazed. An impregnating sealer wears away inside the pores, so a fresh coat refills what is left empty. A cloudy film is dried residue, not a working seal, and must come off first.
