Multicolor Onyx is a translucent Turkish stone that carries amber, green, cream and rust bands inside a single slab. Honey Onyx settles on one warm palette and stays there; this one refuses to choose and runs several through the same piece.
Light travelling through the stone is the property you are paying for. Behind a lamp the bands pull apart into separate layers of colour and the panel stops reading as a surface at all.
What Is Onyx, Geologically?
Architectural onyx is banded calcite, built up a layer at a time wherever mineral-loaded water reached the surface in caves and springs. Each band belongs to its own stretch of deposition, and the traces the water carried set its colour.
None of that connects it to the black onyx in a jewellery case, which is chalcedony. Two materials ended up sharing a word, and that is the whole story.
Why Do the Colors Vary So Much?
Because the water changed as the stone was forming. Ambers and rusts come from iron, greens from other traces, and the clean bands mark stretches where the water ran relatively pure.
Nothing else we handle moves about this much. Slabs off one shipment can carry palettes with nothing in common, and no photograph prepares you for what turns up.
Should You Book-Match It?
Book-matching opens two sequential slabs like a book and mirrors the banding across the seam. With this much colour in play the result is striking, turning a busy panel into a composition somebody clearly intended.
Raise it when you place the order rather than at fabrication. Sequential cutting is the point, and the pair have to travel together from the start.
