What Is Marigold Granite?

Coarse light brown, shot through with olive and black.

Marigold is an Indian granite whose coarse, busy grain runs light brown, broken open by olive-brown and black crystals. Every crystal reads separately, right across the slab.

The name sets the wrong expectation. There is no marigold yellow in it. This is a warm light brown, nearer a dense mottled earth tone than anything golden, so judge it on the slab in our CDO yard rather than on the word.

The grain has no direction, which keeps fabrication simple. A slab can be laid whichever way the room wants, and that hands us room to move when we place a seam.

At ₱3,400 per square meter it sits mid-table on the CDO granite list, and it is one of the few granites we stock that asks for no sealing at all.

How Do You Clean Marigold Granite?

Three habits, and no sealer to work around.

Clean as You Go

The stone is dense enough that a spill sits on the surface instead of travelling into it. A soft cloth clears nearly all of it, and the busy grain covers for whatever a kitchen misses between wipes.

Use Only Granite Cleaner

Bleach and the acidic sprays sold for bathrooms will dull a polished granite over time, even where there is no sealer for them to strip. A pH-neutral stone cleaner lifts grease and leaves the polish alone.

Never Scour It

Steel wool, abrasive powders and scouring pads leave permanent scuffs in a polish. A plastic scraper takes off anything dried on without marking it.

How Do You Care for Marigold Granite?

Three rules, and not one of them is sealing.

Use a Board for Cutting

Granite will blunt a knife long before a knife marks the granite, so the board is there for your blades rather than for the counter. It also keeps food debris out of a coarse grain.

Support Overhangs Properly

Stone is strong in compression and weaker in tension, so a breakfast bar reaching past about 30 cm wants a bracket underneath it. That is a decision for fabrication, not something to patch afterwards.

Never Sit or Stand on It

Granite is hard, not flexible, so an unsupported overhang can split under someone’s weight. Fetch a step stool instead of climbing onto the counter.

Is Marigold Granite Good for Kitchen Countertops?

One of the most practical surfaces in CDO.

Yes. The chemistry is silicate, so acid finds nothing to bite on. Calamansi, vinegar and wine leave the polish as they found it, where a marble would dull in seconds.

Heat is the clean win over engineered quartz. Nothing inside a granite slab burns, so a pan can travel from burner to counter and will not scorch the surface. A trivet is still worth using, because any stone can crack if the temperature change is sudden and extreme, though one careless moment will not cost you the counter.

What is on offer here is unusually strong for the money. No sealing, ever; a coarse busy grain that hides crumbs and water marks better than almost anything else; and a rate that sits mid-table rather than at the top. If you want a counter that asks nothing of you, start the shortlist here.

What you give up is visual, not practical. A mottle this busy is neither quiet nor contemporary, and a kitchen designed around clean lines will not want it, so look at a full slab before deciding.

Does Marigold Granite Need Sealing?

No. And the colour of a slab will never tell you that.

No. Marigold is dense enough that liquid cannot travel into it, so a sealer has nothing to fill. Put one on anyway and it can leave a hazy film sitting on the polish.

This is worth saying plainly, because sealing cannot be read off the colour of a slab. Salt and Pepper, River White and Paradiso Light all want sealing as and when the water test says so. This light brown granite does not, and checking the stone rather than the shade is the only way anyone could know.

Anyone selling you a sealer for this counter without asking which granite it is has not checked either. Cleaning is the entire maintenance routine.

Tan Brown is the darker no-sealing option

Tan Brown skips the sealer as well, in a much darker brown carrying black and burgundy grain, at ₱3,500 per sqm. Tone decides between the two of them, not upkeep.

Baltic Brown is the boldest grain

Baltic Brown arrives from Finland with large rounded brown clusters instead of a fine grain, at ₱3,300 per sqm. Far more visible pattern, and it does want sealing.

What Colours Go With Marigold Granite?

A warm neutral that gets along with almost anything.

Light brown carrying dark grain is about as accommodating as a counter gets. There is no strong colour of its own in it, so very little in a kitchen will actually clash.

Cream and warm white cabinetry gives the calmest result, and the dark crystals stop the pairing reading as bland. That is the safe route.

Timber is the natural fit. Oak, teak and narra carry the same warm undertone, which is why this slab settles into an older Kagay-anon kitchen without looking out of place.

Darker doors work as well. Olive, forest green and dark brown all pick up colours already present in the grain. Cool gray is the one to avoid, since it tends to leave the brown looking muddy rather than warm. Brass and bronze suit the handles best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Marigold granite yellow?

No. The name promises it, but there is no marigold yellow in the stone at all. What you get is a warm light brown with olive-brown and black crystals running through it, so judge it on the slab in CDO rather than on the name.

Does Marigold granite need sealing?

No. Liquid cannot get into a stone this dense, so a sealer has nothing to fill and may dry to a hazy film if anyone applies one. Colour is no guide to which granites in CDO need sealing, and this is one that does not.

Can you tell from the colour whether a granite needs sealing?

No. Porosity varies stone by stone and pays no attention to colour. Salt and Pepper, River White and Paradiso Light are pale and all want sealing, while Absolute Black and Tan Brown are dark and want none. This light brown granite wants none either, so check the specific stone rather than assuming from the shade, and our CDO yard can tell you which is which.

Can you put a hot pan on Marigold granite?

Yes. Nothing in it can scorch, because no resin holds the slab together, so a pan off the burner leaves neither burn nor mark. Thermal shock on a cold slab still argues for a trivet, but this is granite’s clearest edge over engineered quartz.

Does Marigold granite stain?

Not in normal use. Wiped promptly, oil, wine and turmeric sit on the surface and come away with the cloth, and no sealer is involved at any point. The coarse grain also covers for anything left behind between wipes in a busy CDO kitchen.

Does it etch like marble?

No. The chemistry is silicate rather than calcium carbonate, so acid has nothing in the polish to dissolve. Calamansi, vinegar and wine sit on it harmlessly, where a marble would go dull almost at once.

Can Marigold granite be used outdoors?

Yes. Colour holds in full sun, where engineered quartz yellows instead, so lanai counters, outdoor kitchens and poolside runs are all fair game. With no sealing to keep up, it is a particularly easy stone to leave outside.
