Honey Onyx is a translucent stone running through warm amber, gold and caramel, laid down in irregular horizontal bands. Turkish quarries produce it, and of everything we handle nothing else looks remotely like it.
Its defining property is that light gets through. Set a source behind a panel and the whole face lifts and glows, at which point the banding stops being pattern and becomes depth.
Is Onyx the Same as the Gemstone?
No, though the shared word misleads people constantly. Onyx in the architectural sense means banded calcite, built up layer by layer where mineral-rich water surfaced in caves and springs.
The black stone set into rings is chalcedony, an unrelated mineral. Anyone who came looking for something black has arrived at the wrong material.
Why Is It Translucent?
Calcite crystals here are large and aligned tightly enough that a beam travels between them instead of bouncing off the face. Reduce the thickness and more light comes through, which is why lit panels are often cut thinner than a standard slab.
How much passes varies between pieces and across a single face. Dense banding stops more of it, so the glow comes out uneven, and that unevenness is nearly always why people wanted the stone.
Why Does the Banding Vary So Much?
Every band records one period of deposition. Width, direction and depth of colour all move from block to block, and two pieces side by side can look unrelated.
Choose it yourself rather than off a screen. Banding is the whole design on a feature panel, and no photograph predicts what a two-metre face will do.
