Emperador Dark is a deep brown marble threaded throughout by a fine mesh of paler tan and cream veins. The background really is dark, nearer to bitter chocolate than to any timber tone, and the veins arrive as a close weave rather than as long sweeping bands.

Spain has supplied it for generations, chiefly from Novelda and Yecla, with further blocks cut in Turkey and China under the same trade name. Which quarry a block came from shifts the tone, not the way the slab behaves.

Distance changes it completely. From across a room it is one solid dark plane; up close the weave separates into something intricate, which is why it works where a flat dark counter would only look heavy.

Most supermarket sprays, and every vinegar-based one, are acidic enough to do the harm you are guarding against. A cleaner made for marble pulls grease off without touching the polish.

Always Keep the Surface Dry

Mineral rings from hard water stand out plainly on dark polished stone. A dry cloth removes them before they build into a haze.

Etching is the constant. Acid eats the polish and leaves a lighter, flatter patch, and on dark stone that patch announces itself. No sealer stops it.

Honing settles most of the argument. Strip the gloss and an etch has nothing to interrupt, and the colour returns as a deep matte brown many owners prefer anyway.

Test, do not diarise. Drip water onto a corner nobody looks at, wait fifteen minutes, then wipe; darkened stone underneath means the slab is drinking and wants a coat.

How often that comes round depends on the surface. A working counter might ask every six months as a rough guide; a vanity or a vertical face goes far longer, since no cooking oil reaches it.

Learn where the boundary sits. A sealed slab etches exactly as an unsealed one does, because etching is a reaction with the stone rather than a liquid soaking in.

Neither problem is permanent, and they are repaired differently. A stain usually draws out under a poultice; a light etch buffs back with polishing powder, and a deep one goes to a fabricator to be honed and repolished.
